Where can I purchase TECHPARK products? |

How do you produce seeds? |
In many ways we are vegetable growers, but instead of selling the fruits of the plants we grow, we sell the seed in those fruits. In reality it's much more complicated, but the principle is the same. Learn more |
What are hybrids? |
Hybrids allow researchers to combine the best qualities of two plants. For instance, we can combine a watermelon plant with large fruit with another watermelon plant that produces deep red fruit in order to get a hybrid that grows large, deep red fruit. To produce hybrid seed of this new plant, we grow both "parent" plants and make sure that one plant pollinates the other to form the hybrid. This is different than "open-pollinated" seed production where pollination is not controlled. |
Why do growers prefer hybrids? |
Hybrids, which need to be re-produced every year through special seed production techniques, offer tremendous benefits. In processor tomatoes, for instance, a farmer today can produce more tomatoes on one acre of land with hybrids than he could on more than seven acres with the non-hybrid varieties in the 1980s. In addition, traits such as disease resistance, uniformity and fruit quality, can be "stacked" together more readily in hybrids. |
How do you make seed for seedless watermelon? |
By controlling the pollination of watermelon plants in the same way described above, we are able to produce a crop of hybrid seed that when planted produces sterile plants. And if a plant is sterile, its fruit cannot produce seeds. |
Why don't growers save seed anymore? |
While growers in many places, including China, are able to save their seed each season, the vast majority purchase new seed each year because the quality of the seed is worth the additional cost. Also, seed companies ensure that a variety retains its traits and beneficial characteristics, and they take special steps to prevent seed-borne plant diseases. Perhaps most importantly, TECHPARK invests in research to develop new and improved vegetable varieties for the future. |
